OpenAI legacy model shutdown on Oct 23, 2026: what is retired and what replaces it

Confirmed: in its 2026-04-22 deprecation notice, OpenAI listed a batch of legacy API model snapshots for shutdown on Oct 23, 2026. These models are no longer accessible. Requests that name them now return errors instead of being rerouted.

Aliases count too. For example, plain gpt-4 and o1 point to snapshots on this list.

If something broke

Search your code and config (env vars, prompt templates, eval configs) for every ID and alias above.
Switch each one to its replacement and re-run your evals. Output style and token counts change, so check cost as well as quality.
Check the replacement's price before you switch. A newer model can cost more per token than the one it replaces.
